Tomás González Cueto was one of those men in the shadow of the former president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales. A lawyer with strong political ties – he was Mariano Rajoy’s trusted State lawyer – he had a business relationship as an external commissioner of the federal entity for which he received 300,000 euros a year. Until today. On Thursday morning, RFEF employees were busy drafting the burofax signed by the president of the management committee, Pedro Rocha, in which he was informed that said relationship was extinguished. The Federation, which reinforced its figure after the departure of Rubiales last September, despite being identified as one of its strong men in the entity along with Andreu Camps, former general director, is now dispensing with his services. When he has no choice.

Arrested on Wednesday by UCO agents for considering him a key player in the entire network being investigated, the dismissal of González Cueto means ending the armed and legal arm of the blondeism. State lawyer and owner of the GC office, González Cueto was in the sights of Judge Delia Rodríguez, head of court number 4 of Majadahonda who is investigating the case opened as a result of the complaint filed by Miguel Galán for the federation contracts. to bring the Super Cup to Saudi Arabia and the commission that Gerard Piqué received. The federation has also dispensed with the services of Ramón Caravaca, partner of GC. Since entering the federation, the office run by González Cueto has invoiced hundreds of thousands of euros to the federation.

Fired in September by Andreu Camps and the integrity director Miguel García Caba, González Cueto was kept by Pedro Rocha, first when he was appointed by Rubiales as interim president and later when the Extremaduran leader became president of the managing committee. At that time, federation sources assured that it was difficult to get rid of González Cueto because the future of the territorial presidents involved in Operation Soule, which ended the mandate of Ángel María Villar, was in his hands. González Cueto was in charge of representing the federation in the case.

One of his last services provided was also to represent the federation at the hearing of the Super League case held in Madrid on March 14. González Cueto was also key in the delay of the electoral call. Six months after Luis Rubiales resigned, the federation has still not held elections. Cueto, together with former Secretary General Andreu Camps, advised Rocha that only one electoral process should be held for the 2024-2028 Olympic cycle and that it was advisable not to apply the federative statutes that established that the managing commission chaired by Rocha should first call elections. with the current assembly to elect a president who would exhaust Rubiales’ mandate.

The survival of González Cueto as an external federation advisor overshadowed the regenerationism of the federation that the Government and society demanded and has ended up damaging the image of Pedro Rocha, who has only dispensed with his services when he has been detained within the framework of the Operation Brody. This was unleashed because the judge did not see her demands for documentation from the federation satisfied. Federal sources assure that Rocha was not aware of these requirements and assure that these were processed by González Cueto and González Segura. Both will appear in court this Friday.

González Cueto arrived at the federation in 2018, led by Luis Rubiales to, together with Andreu Camps, be the ideologue and legal architect of the bitter war against LaLiga and its president Javier Tebas. Before arriving at the federation, González Cueto had made a career in the heart of the sports legal system. He was a member of the Sports Arbitration Commission of the Spanish Olympic Committee and also of the Sports Administrative Tribunal (TAD). He had to leave this last organization shortly after publishing this newspaper that he had to abstain from a vote to open a file against Villar. The Basque leader had hired the services of a lawyer who collaborated with the Jiménez de Parga law firm, of which González Cueto was a member at the time.

Many federation employees point to González Cueto as the man who “ruled everything” as a member of the delegate and economic commission as well. On flights he used to occupy the first row of seats next to Rubiales. His ancestry allowed him to place his daughter in the legal department of the federation, already known in key positions, in the case of Elvira Andrés, director of compliance, while some of the most gruesome episodes of the blondeism. Andrés is now secretary of the management committee and chief of staff of Pedro Rocha. Another trace of blondeism sheltered under Rocha’s wing.
