Sundance Film Festival CDMX 2024: what you need to know about this film festival in Mexico

Cinépolis and the Sundance Institute have teamed up to present the first edition of the Sundance Film Festival CDMX 2024. This initiative that has been worked on for several years is finally a reality and from April 25 to 28, the inhabitants of Mexico City will have the opportunity to enjoy one of the most outstanding independent film festivals in the world that is traditionally celebrated in Utah, United States.

This film event was first held in Park City in 1978 under the name Utah/US Film Festival and was founded by Sterling Van Wagenen, John Earle and actor Robert Redford. The festival initially focused on independent films and documentaries, seeking to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers outside the traditional Hollywood circuit. In 1981, it was renamed Sundance Film Festivalin honor of the character of the American western legend, Sundance Kid, played by Redford in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and over the years, this exhibition has grown in size and prestige, becoming one of the most important seventh art events in the world for independent cinema.

This year, for the first time, the Sundance Film Festival will showcase and support the work of artists from Mexico and Latin America and offer a new cinematic experience for film fans in Mexico City with screenings at Cinépolis Diana, Cinépolis VIP Miyana , Cinépolis VIP Perisur, Cinépolis VIP Mítikah and Cinépolis VIP Satélite.

In its debut in Mexico, the Festival has a program that includes 12 feature films, six national short films, eight question and answer sessions and two panels with directors of the films. These spaces are free and take place at Cinépolis Diana on April 26 and 27, which provides an opportunity to open conversation between the invited filmmakers and the attending public.

This programming is a great effort because for more than a decade there has not been a Film Festival of this magnitude in Mexico City. For this reason, the film selected for the opening screening of the Sundance Film Festival CDMX 2024 was the documentary Frida, directed by Carla Gutiérrez. In the Cinépolis podcast named Paloma and Nachothe director of operations of Cinépolis, Miguel Mier, assures that opening this edition with this piece is something exceptional because Frida’s impact on the world is impressive.
