Xabi Alonso announced this Friday in a press conference that he will continue to be coach of Bayer Leverkusen next season. Alonso, who has a contract until 2026 with the German club, which he currently has first in the Bundesliga with 10 points over the second placed, Bayern Munich, aspires this year to give Leverkusen its first league championship.
The German club has published a message on Alonso has also been very happy: “When the decision was made, I wanted to share it. The management, the team, the staff – everyone here treated me with respect and that’s exactly what I wanted to give back. Now all the cards are on the table and now we all have to put the pedal to the metal to achieve our goals.”
Leverkusen could end up winning their first league title if they continue like this in the competition, where they have not yet conceded a single defeat. His last best campaign was in 2010/11, when he finished second, as well as in 2001/02, 1999/00, 1998/99 or 1996/97.
Thus ends speculation about whether the coach could join clubs where he was also a player next season, such as Bayern Munich or Liverpool. Regarding the English club, in January, his current coach, Jürgen Klopp, announced that he would not continue with them at the end of the season. Bayern, for their part, said they would not have Thomas Tuchel from next season.
Xabi Alonso arrived at Bayer Leverkusen in 2022, after leaving the Real Sociedad reserve team, which ended up in relegation positions in the 2nd division. In his first season, he managed to add 14 wins, eight draws and 12 losses to place Bayer Leverkusen in 6th position, which allowed them to qualify for the Europa League. In the European competition, he is still active, and will play in the quarterfinals against West Ham.
