Paul King is in charge of directing Wonkathe new prequel to Roald Dahl’s classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is about the origins of the flamboyant Willy Wonka. Chalamet was chosen to bring to life the character who in the past has been played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.

As in previous adaptations of this story, Wonka will be full of songs, and in an interview with Total Film (via The Hollywood Reporter), King promises that we will see the singing talent of Chalamet, whom he compared to Bing CrosbyAmerican singer who influenced artists such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Dean Martin.

(He) has a beautiful singing voice. The person he reminded me of was Bing Crosby. There’s a lot of variety because it goes from a couple of bigger, more spectacular things to moments of pure, real emotion, and he can do it all… I’m going to sound like a crazed fan.
Although it will have songs, King does not consider Wonka to be a musical
The Oompa Loompas sing a lot in the book and Dahl always uses poetry. But he didn’t want it to simply become a musical where people sing dialogue to each other for no discernible reason. I felt like it was more of a movie with songs than a musical.
This is not the first time that the filmmaker praises the actors of WonkaWell, in an interview with Rolling Stone He revealed that he always wanted Chalamet as the protagonist after learning about his musical performances on YouTube:
But because he’s Timothée Chalamet and his life is so absurd, his high school musical performances are on YouTube and have hundreds of thousands of views. I knew then, from portraying Timmy Chalamet, that he could sing and dance very well. And he knew that was in his arsenal, but he didn’t know how good he was.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the movies
Charlie and the Chocolate Factorythe book of Roald Dahl, has been made into a film twice, the first was in 1971 and 2005, the first directed by Mel Stuart and the second by Tim Burton. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory starred Gene Wilder in the lead role, and his song “Pure Imagination” is considered a classic and appeared in the film Ready Player One: The Game Begins – 78%.
The 2005 film directed by Burton had Johnny Depp (Minamata – 35%, Waiting for the Barbarians – 51%, Young Scissorhands – 91%) as Willy Wonka, in a performance that divided opinions among fans of the book and the previous film. However, it obtained a positive rating from critics, and comments such as that of Rob Gonsalves in eFilmCritic.com
This genuinely beautiful and imaginative Factory is the movie fans of the original Factory (who haven’t seen it since they were kids) carry around in their heads.
Wonka It will hit theaters on December 15, although it was originally scheduled for March 17, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed its release. The first trailer was released on July 11 and gave us a first look at this new version of the children’s classic that has captivated thousands of people for decades. The project is part of a wave of remakes, prequels, sequels and spin offs that has been plaguing Hollywood for some time, and is considered by some a symptom of a lack of creativity.
