Attorney General Raúl Torrez, from the state of New Mexico, recently informed public opinion, at a press conference, about a case that he described as one of the worst he has prosecuted in his life: the death by torture of a disabled woman who was killed by her caregivers.
Torrez’s words reveal the seriousness of what happened: “The abuse and neglect the victim went through was horrific, and the injuries she sustained are among the worst I have seen in my career as a prosecutor.“, he asserted. This was reported by the news portal Fox News.
The attorney general assured that it was a case of torture. “There’s no other word for it,” he said.
The victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, was 28 years old and was found in the back of a van.. She was dehydrated and was allegedly drugged.
Three suspects have been arrested:
– Angelita René Chacón, 52 years old and a native of Río Rancho.
– Patricia Hurtado, 42 years old and also from Río Rancho.
– Light Scott, from Clovid.
The victim was a patient in a state care program for children and adults with intellectual or motor disabilities.according to the authorities.
The suspects were arrested with the support of the New Mexico State Police, as well as the Rio Ancho Police Department, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper.
Angelita Chacón was charged with various crimes, including fatal abuse or neglect of a patient and conspiracy to commit false arrest.for which he could spend up to 19 years in prison.
Patricia Hurtado, on the other hand, was also accused of the same charges, as well as abuse of a patient resulting in psychological or physical damage.. For these charges, Hurtado could spend up to 20.5 years in prison.
Finally, Luz Scott could spend up to 3 years in prison on the false arrest and false arrest conspiracy charges.
Two of the suspects, Chacón and Hurtado, were employees of the state care program, identified as At Home Advocacy, and were paid $5,000 to care for the victim, according to information published by the Torrez prosecutor’s office.
