Among cuckoo clocks and Black Forest cakes, surrounded by more classic German vegetation, green and humid, which warns of the arrival of summer, a red ceramic bull guarded by two Spanish flags sneaks in. Its price, 1,500 euros, a tribute gift from Donaueschingen to honor the Spanish team. There, in the Der Öschberghof complex, La Roja will rest during their stay at the European Championship in Germany.

The resort, all luxury: 127 rooms even equipped with pillows chosen by the players, three golf courses, a water area so that the soccer players can treat themselves, plus a state-of-the-art work area. And so that nothing is missing, the federation moved a gym from Las Rozas to install it in the SV Aasen sports city, five minutes from where Luis de la Fuente’s boys reside. An identical route to the one Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool took last summer and that Xavi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen plans during their next stage.

Donaueschingen takes its name from the Danube, the second longest river in Europe but the one that crosses the most countries in the world, and which originates in the town where Spain is preparing to become the team that has opened the showcases the most times to place a Eurocup. For now, it is tied at three with Germany. “We are looking for a quiet place, away from noise,” the federation reminds us. Last December, Albert Luque, then sports director of the RFEF, was considering four options for La Roja’s base camp. He quickly discarded the first two. He hesitated, however, with the Kamen facilities, 20 kilometers from Dortmund, the place where Luis Aragonés’ Spain stayed in the 2006 World Cup. “It was very deteriorated, we looked for a more modern place,” they remember in the RFEF. . They were not wrong. They even have a restaurant with two Michelin stars.

For Spain, however, food is not a problem. La Roja’s chef, Rodrigo Vargas, arrived a week ago to tour the area’s markets and look for the best quality for the nearly 100 people who make up the La Roja expedition. After landing in Stuttgart yesterday, Spain traveled by bus to Der Öschberghof. About 500 fans did not miss the Red training. There, where the Danube rises, Spain concentrates to make history. Luxury is not lacking.
