Want It is also the title of the magnificent series directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and written by her together with Eduard Sola and Júlia de Paz, which Movistar Plus+ premieres this Thursday. Wantthe series, is all the meanings of want, the verb.
After a prologue with enjoyed and consensual sex, the plot of the series begins: Miren, played by a Nagore Aramburu who deserves genuflection, is at the police station, determined to report her husband for sexual violence. A husband—also wonderful Pedro Casablanc—to whom she has been married for 30 years and with whom she has had two children, now adults. The trigger of this story also works in all its meanings: it triggers it and, at the same time, it makes something explode into the air, in this case the family.
From here on, any viewer with a certain sensitivity will enjoy a story as hard as it is everyday and full of nuances, which rests on the shoulders of its immeasurable protagonist, very well surrounded, not only by Casablanc, but also by Loreto Mauleón, Iván Pellicer and Miguel Bernardeau.
The story is terribly everyday not because the cases of rape allegations within the couple abound, but because of the family and social portrait that emerges from it. That of the economic and social dependence to which so many women have been tied and which has restricted their freedom. The freedom to say no, not just in sex, but in everything else.
How many Miren we know. How many apparently normal homes have been sustained on the renunciations and normalized suffering of so many women. How many people will start to see Want and you will think: “My mother should have denounced my father.” And how many people will do it with the same opinion as Ane, Miren’s sister-in-law: “Sometimes you give in, like you give in in other things. Maybe you don’t feel like it, but hey, what? Are you going to put all 60-year-old men in jail? And how many, especially of the latter but also of the former, will question their convictions throughout the four episodes. Want It is great television, the kind that very few people know how to make. Probably also for this reason, few people are given the opportunity to demonstrate it. For that, you also have to want.
