Villarreal rehabilitates against a Betis in decline | Soccer | Sports

There are decisive moments in the development of matches. At 66 minutes, with the score at 2-2, Jorgensen made a brutal save against Fekir. On the next play, Gerard Moreno invented a high-flying control to leave Sorloth alone, who made it 2-3. Key actions from a clash that Villarreal deservedly won. Marcelino’s men rehabilitated after their European defeat against Marseille (4-0) and showed a lot of pride. Villarreal is a quality team, which added its third consecutive victory in the League and took advantage of a Betis that is losing steam in the fight for Europe. The green and white played in an acceptable manner in the first half and fell into inexplicable laziness in the second. They gave away an own goal, 2-2, by Sokratis, and then they were not able to subdue an opponent with defensive problems. Betis was soft, with Fekir without strength, and with players like Chimy Ávila with little head. He saw the second yellow in an absurd protest after the referee had sent off Alberto Moreno a minute earlier. Unhinged and out of ideas, Betis was left at the mercy of Villarreal. Sorloth scored 2-3 (he scored again after his hat-trick against Granada) and his team dominated the final stretch of the match with pleasure due to the inability of the green and white team, now seventh and out of Europe.

Betis needed the win against Villarreal. Hurried by Real Sociedad’s victory, which relegated them to seventh place, Pellegrini’s team took advantage of the festive atmosphere at Benito Villamarín to try to subdue Marcelino’s team. Although injured in Europe, Villarreal arrived with a streak of seven games without losing in the League (four draws and three wins) and showed that they have touch and danger. Now there are eight. The problem with Marcelino’s team, however, is his lack of passion. They are a good team, but too cold and with serious problems at the back.

Therefore, a very even match, with a lot of ball at the foot, was defined by three plays of efficiency and quality. The first, from a set piece, with the two Betis midfielders, Carvalho and Guido, acting as forwards against the passivity of the yellow defense. Guido scored, with the stands demanding his renewal, after an assist from the Portuguese. And so did Baena after an excellent play between Moreno and Sorloth, who took advantage of Fornals’s delayed position. Two goals from two partnerships and a third, Betis’ second, drawn with surgeon’s precision. William Carvalho, starter after his good game at the Metropolitano, threw a great pass to Fornals, who crossed into the area over the line. Willian José went ahead of Bailly, who did not read the play well. A good goal that disarmed Villarreal after the tie.

Everything good that Betis showed in the first half was diluted in the second. Sokratis scored an own goal that gave Villarreal a lot of air. Gerard Moreno wreaked havoc between the lines and the key play came in the 66th minute. A save by Jorgensen made it 2-3. The visitors’ control of the game was total in the final stretch of the match. Much more so after both teams were left with 10 due to the expulsions of Alberto Moreno and Chimy Ávila. Parejo began to control the ball and Betis began to dissipate. Fekir, very slow, was the living image of Betic decline. Villarreal added its third consecutive victory in the League without being weighed down by the defeat received against Marseille. Betis, with a whole clean week to prepare for the match, ended up suffocated. No one understands football.
