A gender reveal party in the community of San Pedro, Navolato, in Mexico, ended in tragedy when a stunt plane participating in the event crashed in front of guests on Saturdaycausing the death of the pilot.

The couple expecting their baby hired a Piper PA-25 plane to drop pink powder to indicate they were having a girl. However, after performing the maneuver, the plane’s left wing broke off and the pilot lost control of the aircraft, falling to the ground.

The moment of the accident was captured in a video that was broadcast on the social network X, formerly known as Twitter, where you can see the couple surrounded by their family and friends in front of a sign that says “Oh Baby”, while the plane flew leaving a pink wake. Shouts of excitement mixed with those of horror as they watched the plane plunge.

The pilot, identified as Luis Ángel N., 32, was rescued by the emergency services from the wreckage of the plane and taken to the hospital, where he died, according to The Sun newspaper.

The video has gone viral and has generated numerous reactions from X users, who have criticized the irresponsibility of organizing this type of party that puts people’s lives and the environment at riskreviewed New York Post.

“These gender reveal parties are getting out of hand as people die from them every year,” wrote one user.

“The way the camera refocused on the couple without a care in the world for the pilot is sad”commented another.

It hasn’t been the first case of a gender reveal party gone wrong. In 2020, a celebration sparked a California wildfire that burned through 10,000 acres of land.

Another couple was attacked when their “oh baby” sign sent pink smoke and confetti into the air as multiple flares nearly ignited surrounding trees. Likewise, an Australian family set their car on fire in 2019 thanks to special tires designed to emit blue smoke to announce the sex of their baby.

These facts have revived the debate about the convenience and safety of these parties, that are becoming more popular and extravagant, but that have become more dangerous.
