The US government issued a warning to North Korea on Tuesday not to supply Russia with weapons for the war in Ukraine.
According to White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan at a press conference, North Korea “will pay a price in the international community” incurs in violating the UN Security Council resolutions that prohibit it from exporting weapons.
“Providing Russia with weapons to use on the battlefield against grain silos and heating infrastructure in major cities, as we head into winter to try to conquer territory from another sovereign nation, is not going to do well for North Korea and will pay a price for it in the international community,” Sullivan said.
Sullivan revealed that the United States has information that Russia and North Korea are “actively moving forward.” in their negotiations for an arms swap that would allow Moscow to receive “significant quantities and multiple types” of munitionsincluding artillery, for use in Ukraine, Politico reported.
According to the adviser, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu recently traveled to North Korea to try to secure the deal and has since Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have exchanged letters promising to increase their bilateral cooperation.
Also, another group of Russian officials traveled to Pyongyang in order to follow the discussions on the potential arms deal between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the Russian regime has not confirmed or denied on Tuesday the possible meeting between Putin and Kim, which according to the Washington Post and the New York Times could take place this month in Russia to seal the exchange of arms.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov He limited himself to saying that “there is nothing to announce” about a meeting between the two leaders and that “there is no change” in the Russian position on the situation in Ukraine6.
However, Sullivan clarified that he could not elaborate on what information the White House has about Kim’s expectations that the discussion with Putin “will continue, including among leaders and perhaps in person.”
