The United States Department of Justice and the FBI announced Wednesday a investigation on death of a Teen 17-year-old African-American who was shot by a police last month in Washington.
Federal authorities made this announcement a day after the United States Park Police released body camera video of the officer who killed young Dalaneo Martin.
The events occurred on March 18 when agents of the Police of Parks and the Police Metropolitan of the US capital attended the alleged theft of a vehicle by the Teen.
Footage shows one of the officers climbed into the backseat of the car to arrest Martin, who started the vehicle and drove away with the officer inside.
He police threatened the Teen to shoot him if he didn’t stop, but when he didn’t obey, he shot him several times in the back, killing him on the spot.
The United States Attorney’s Office said in a statement collected by local media that the images are “extremely disturbing” and announced that it has opened, together with the FBI, a investigation for the possible violation of Martin’s civil rights.
“The loss of a life is always tragic, but it is especially heartbreaking when it involves a minor,” the agency said.
In a press conference, the victim’s mother, Terra Martin, demanded the immediate arrest of the agent who killed the young man and whose identity has not been revealed, local press reported.
In 2020, the death of the African-American George Floyd at the hands of the police triggered a wave of protests and racial riots in the United States unprecedented since the assassination of Martin Luther King in the late 1960s.
