The Department of Justice announced this Monday that it will pay some 2.7 billion dollars in the coming weeks to 5,361 victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001, which raises to more than 6,000 million the compensation paid to victims of terrorism International and their families.
The Fund to compensate those affected was established by Congress in 2015 and is managed by the Criminal Division’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section (MLARS).
Since then, it has already distributed 3.3 billion in 4 rounds and the payment announced this Monday is added to that amount.
The Department of Justice specified in its statement that the number of claimants who meet the conditions has gone from more than 2,000 in 2017 to more than 15,500 today.
Of these, 12,117 are 9/11 victims and their families and 3,652 have claims related to other acts of “state-sponsored” international terrorism.
