The Delegate Commission of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved this Thursday the elimination of overtime in the Spanish Super Cup in both the men’s and women’s formats, as reported. With this modification, the RFEF will try to alleviate the competition minutes for footballers. This decision has been made following several requests from Spanish clubs. The change implies that if at the end of 90 minutes the tie continues, the teams will go to penalties directly.
The modification of the RFEF comes in a context of debate due to the large number of accumulated matches in which footballers have threatened a strike. Players like Rodri, Koundé and Carvajal denounced the situation of the players and the creation of new competitions and the loading of matches. In fact, the two Spaniards have suffered serious injuries to their knees at the beginning of the season that have caused them to disappear from the playing fields until next season.
In the last two editions of the men’s Spanish Super Cup, in three of the six games played there was extra time, and even penalties. In Real Madrid – Valencia and in Real Betis – FC Barcelona in the 2023 edition and in Real Madrid – Atlético de Madrid from the previous year. The next Super Cup, where this change will be implemented, will be played between January 8 and 12, 2025. The semi-final matches will be Real Madrid – Mallorca and Barcelona – Athletic. The whites will try to retain the title from the previous season.
