The first piece of the Imelsa case already has a sentence. The Provincial Court of Valencia has sentenced Marcos Benavent, the former high-ranking official of the Valencian PP who secretly recorded his alleged corruption and those of his PP colleagues for years to seven years and ten months in jail, and then handed them over to justice. Benavent, who defined himself as a money junkie, was the manager of the public company Imelsa of the Valencia Provincial Council and trusted staff of its president, Alfonso Rus.
The ruling has endorsed the recordings of various people that he himself made, which are the basis of almost all the pieces that hang from the Taula case and of those who, after changing lawyers just before the holding of this trial, renounced. Benavent assured that he himself had manipulated them and his defense and others had questioned their chain of custody and even their dumping in court. The ruling, on the other hand, endorses them, which will mark the rest of the causes.
The ruling, on the other hand, acquits both the former vice president of the Provincial Council and former mayor of Moncada, Juan José Medina, and his party, the PP, who was accused as subsidiary civil liability and it is not considered proven that Imelsa took charge, through cost overruns , of invoices from the company Thematica Events, of which Benavent was the secret co-owner, of electoral expenses from the local elections of 2007 and general elections of 2008. “It has not been proven that the payment of the services provided by the entity Thematica Events and subcontracted entities in the electoral campaigns have been carried out by Imelsa in charge of cost overruns”, the ruling states.
The ruling points out that since he was appointed manager of Imelsa by Rus, together with his partner Rafael García Barat, also sentenced to nine years in prison, “they agreed and, following a preconceived plan, began to use it for their personal purposes, rigging fraudulently awarding contracts, to take economic advantage of the contracts for their own personal benefit, which has led to the diversion of public funds and patrimonial damage to the Public Administration”.

The conviction of García Barat also includes having rigged in favor of Thematica and another of its companies the adjudication of several editions of the library bus for the districts together with Francisca Tamarit Vallés, head of the Cultural Action service of the Department of Culture. “The actions of the defendant Tamarit Vallés were presided over by the desire to favor the enrichment of the defendant Rafael García Barat due to the fraudulent awarding of contracts,” she explains.
