It’s been just over a month since The Boy and the Heron premiered in Japan. In the native country of its director,Hayao Miyazaki, the film had almost zero publicity, but things will not be like that in the rest of the world. Through a very discreet teaser, GKids Films, the distributor in charge of its exhibition in Canada and the United States, has begun promoting its release.

What is The Boy and the Heron about?
In the video, only the Studio Ghibli logo is shown followed by a black screen revealing the synopsis for The Boy and the Heron. The film is the story of a boy named Mahito, who searches for his deceased mother in a land that is shared between the living and the dead. It is known that the story is an animated adaptation of the novel How do you live? of Genzaburo Yoshino.
The production company decided not to make any trailer for the premiere in Japan in the middle of last July. Despite this, the film did very well, and soon found distribution in Western markets. Its premiere here will take place in the following weeks as part of the program for this year’s edition of the Toronto Film Festival.
Although the teaser is effectively void of footage, stills of the animation leaked a couple of weeks ago thanks to the release of the film’s artbook. The material revealed that his style is identical to what Studio Ghibli and specifically Miyazaki have accustomed us to. So surely the visual aspect will be to the taste of the fans of this production company.

The Boy and the Heron will premiere in North America on September 7 at the Toronto Film Festival and will then also have screenings at the New York and San Sebastián festivals. Unfortunately, it is not yet known if any distributor has acquired or is interested in obtaining the rights to bring it to Mexico or Latin America, but this situation will surely be resolved in the following weeks once industry executives can see it at the aforementioned events.
