Technology at the service of people, today as it was a hundred years ago | Technology

Telefónica is about to turn one hundred years old. The company today has little to do with the one that was launched in 1924. The old days, based on freeways of copper to carry the voice to (almost) the last corner of the country, have given way to cutting-edge intelligent processes that lead the new digital era. But what has remained unchanged is the DNA of that pioneering National Telephone Company of Spain (CTNE, its founding acronym): putting technological innovation at the service of people.

Technology promotes a more competitive, efficient and sustainable society. It is synonymous with progress, because it eliminates barriers, brings people together and improves their daily lives. It allows people to communicate, wherever they are, and open up to the world. Makes it easier for them to work remotely safely. It helps them make optimal business decisions based on data analysis, improve processes and, ultimately, makes Telefónica's mission a reality: “Achieve a more human world, connecting people's lives.”

Barcelona, a speaker for the planet

On Monday, February 26, a new edition of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) begins in Barcelona, a benchmark in the industry due to the large number of companies that attend, for the innovative proposals that are presented and for demonstrating with specific cases that the technology is conceived to solve society's problems.

Once again, Telefónica will attend the MWC, born in 2006, to show its technological capabilities and claim the important role that digitalization plays in improving people's lives. The technology allows, among other features, communications with minimal latencies, intelligent control of water and electricity consumption, analysis of air quality, monitoring of machinery for preventive maintenance and improvement of health services with predictive techniques.

The future is built thanks to millions of connected devices that share data all the time, advanced analysis with big data and artificial intelligence, cloud computing, robotics, edge computing…

We are experiencing the greatest technological revolution in the history of humanity. It is not a single technology, but a sum of them: so many have never coexisted in such a short time. Attention is drawn to the infinite opportunities generated by having fiber optics and a high-quality 5G mobile network like the one Spain has, but also to the future that is being built thanks to the millions of connected devices that share data all the time, advanced analysis with big data and artificial intelligence, cloud computing, robotics, edge computing…

Digital twins optimize quality in the production of industrial parts, among other functions. The one developed by Telefónica, Making Smart Industry Happen, for example, has the capacity to make decisions in real time thanks to the potential of technologies such as 5G, edge computing, data analytics and machine learning.

Digitalization is the present and the future. It represents the way to ensure economic and social progress, and guarantee business resilience. But at Telefónica they are convinced that this technological development must be inclusive, fair and sustainable, to leave no one behind and guarantee a positive impact on the planet.

This new digital era must be built with values, putting people at the center, and must be extremely respectful of privacy and security. It's Telefónica time.
