The medical personnel and the ambulances that were heading to the Cuscatlán Stadium were blocked on their way and for this reason they were slow to provide care to the victims of the saturday night stampedeprior to the match between Alianza and Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos (FAS) of the El Salvador soccer league.

So far, the number of fans killed and more than 100 injured during the stampede remains at 12.

The Minister of the Interior of El Salvador, Carlos Bidegaín, assured that those attending the stadium denounced these irregularities such as the overselling of tickets and the sale of false tickets. In addition to the closing of the gates and the lack of security personnel.

“The same fans have reiterated the overselling of tickets, counterfeit ticketsclosing gates, the low presence of stadium personnel at each entrance and the ticket office,” Bidegaín commented during a press conference.

The death of these 12 people, which becomes the greatest sports tragedy in the Central American country, occurred within the framework of the return game for the quarterfinals of the Clausura 2023 tournament.

FIFA and different world football teams have expressed their condolences to the Salvadoran fans, as has the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The Salvadoran authorities are investigating the incident, but to date they have not identified any alleged culprit.
