A woman drowned one of her daughters in her home in South Carolina and was trying to kill another girl when screams woke up the oldest daughter, managing to save her little sisterthe authorities reported.
Identified as Jamie Bradley Brun37 years old, She was charged with murder and attempted murder. following the attack that took place Friday morning at his home on the island of St. Helena, Beaufort County Sheriff PJ Tanner said at a news conference.
The mother spoke to detectives and Tanner called it a horrible crime, but told reporters she would not say why Brun wanted to kill her daughters.
“I am not a mental health expert. It’s not my job to determine if someone has a mental health problem,” the sheriff said.
The woman’s 16-year-old daughter was sleeping when at 1:26 a.m. Friday she woke up to the screams of her 8-year-old sister. The official did not specify how Brun was trying to drown his daughter, but revealed that the minor’s screams came from the bathroom, reported CBSNews.
The young woman entered the bathroom and managed to snatch her younger sister from Brun’s arms and ran to the house of a close relative to contact 911Tanner noted.
“I’m very proud of her. I think she did an amazing job. She stood up for her family when no one else was available,” the sheriff stated. “Her courage of hers is amazing.”
The officers arrived at the site eight minutes later and Braun and her 6-year-old daughter were found, who was later pronounced dead at hospital after officers and paramedics failed to revive her with CPRthe detectives noted.
The woman tried to take the gun from one of the officers when she was detained and the officers electrocuted her with a Taser to handcuff her, Tanner explained.
Brun is behind bars without bail. Prison and court records did not reveal whether he had an attorney.
The 8-year-old he tried to drown did not appear to be seriously injured and the sheriff said that she and her older sister are under the protection of other family members.
The mother had no prior arrest record in South Carolina, however, Authorities were called to the home once two years ago after a school employee became concerned about the mental health of one of the girls.Tanner noted.
“We have a lot more information and a lot more details that we know of, but at this time we can’t share,” Tanner said.
