A group of 50 migrants who were traveling on a passenger bus from the central state of San Luis Potosí to Nuevo León, in the north of the country, were kidnapped. by a group of hooded and armed men, the Nuevo León Attorney General’s Office (FGJNL) reported on Tuesday.

He added that the events were recorded on Monday in the limits of San Luis Potosí with Nuevo Leónwhere the complaint was filed and added that the two drivers were also kidnapped.

“During the early hours of May 15, 2023, the owner of a (passenger) bus that was transporting a group of foreign migrants learned, through the GPS location of the vehicle, that in the state of San Luis Potosí, it had gone from his route ”, detailed the FGJNL.

Furthermore, he was informed that the vehicle “remained immobile for 30 minutes and that the passengers had been deprived of their liberty by armed and hooded individuals“.

The Nuevo León Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that as a result of these events, the owner of the bus filed a complaint for the theft of the unit in San Luis Potosí and after that, both prosecutors work together.

He also assured “he did not have further details” of the migrants deprived of their liberty because he said that “the complaint was filed in San Luis Potosí and it is up to that social representation to expand the information.”

Later, the head of the Nuevo León Public Security Secretariat, Gerardo Palacios, pointed out that the National Guard confirmed that the facts where people who were traveling on a bus and were deprived of their liberty occurred in the territory of the state of San Luis Potosí.

“On this side (Nuevo León), the state police Fuerza Civil have managed to locate in the open air and help several foreigners, who in their first interviews confirm this information (the scene of the events) and who would have managed to get to safety by escaping from their captors and leaving San Luis entering the territory of Nuevo León,” he added.

He added that the National Guard bases its claim on satellite tracking “that yields incontrovertible data.”

At night, nine people, originally from Venezuela and Honduras, who were among those kidnapped and who managed to escape from their captors, were located after walking lost along a highway in San Luis Potosí.

Traveling massively on passenger buses is one of the ways migrants use to cross Mexico to the United States, for which they pay thousands of dollars to human traffickers.

These events occur when thousands of migrants try to reach the northern border of Mexico after last Thursday night, the United States stopped applying the Title 42which allowed undocumented migrants to be immediately expelled under the pretext of Covid-19, but established other restrictions on asylum applications at the border and began to deport them through another regulation known as Title 8.

Unlike Title 42, the Title 8 It does allow migrants to request asylum when they arrive at the border, but they have to meet several requirements, including having applied for it in the countries through which they have passed or else they can be quickly deported.
