Mexican singer Natanael Cano was brought to trial on Monday after trying to bribe police in Hermosillo (Sonora), the Sonoran Prosecutor’s Office reported on social media. The events for which the 23-year-old musician has been charged occurred on March 29 in said municipality. He was driving a Dodge Charger sports car at excessive speed on José María Morelos Boulevard, a straight road located northeast of the Sonoran town, until he was stopped by police officers, to whom Cano offered money to omit what had happened.
The prosecution claims that after that scene, Cano continued driving at high speed, which led to the start of a chase with the patrol cars, until he stopped. The agents did not try to stop him at that moment. The event was then captured in images shared on social networks. In them, the young man can be seen skidding with the sports car and with the music at full volume. In those videos, the musician appears talking to the agents. “I gave them 50,000 (pesos),” he says at the scene. One of the policemen reproaches him at that very moment: “To me?” “To your people, to your family!” he specifies. On the ground, some bills can be seen lying around, which one of the agents picks up. One of the young men says before the video cuts off: “We’ll fix it tomorrow.”

The judge has also prohibited the young musician from leaving the country without prior judicial authorization, and he must periodically sign in before a court. The Sonoran Prosecutor’s Office has reported that it will continue with the process so that the courts apply fair sanctions for what happened.
Natanael Cano is one of the most popular musicians in the country. He was the key piece in the emergence of corridos tumbados, a subgenre of Mexican music that has exploded onto the charts nationally and internationally in the last year. He has been controversial since his beginnings due to the lyrics that deal with the music style: violence, women, drugs and lives of excess.
Cano was only 18 years old when he planted the seed of the subgenre, with the publication of his album Lying Down Corridos.
