A Florida fisherman was bitten in the foot by a sharkwhich marks “the second time in the last week that someone has suffered a bite from these marine animals,” according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
“According to reports, the shark was out of the water and on the dock when it bit the fishermanthe sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
Authorities shared that the man was taken to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami for treatment. The sheriff’s office did not report the condition of the injured man.
While talking to the chain CNNthe sheriff’s office identified the fisherman as a 35-year-old man, who said he was bitten around 8 p.m. last Friday, after the shark was hooked and dragged to the pier.
The sheriff’s office shared on Facebook that just a day before the man was bitten, a 20-year-old Miami-Dade County man had a similar encounter with a shark while spearfishing.
That man was also airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami, according to the sheriff’s office.
The 20-year-old who was bitten, Kevin Blanco, spoke with WSVN about the incident and said it was a bull shark that bit his leg.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that shark bites in the state are not common and that when they do occur, they generally do not result in life-threatening injuries.
The commission recommends on its website to stay in groups, avoid water during the dark or twilight hours, and make sure you are aware of up-to-date safety precautions.
