The infamous prison of Saint Quentinin San Francisco Bay, where the largest population of inmates is held sentenced to death in the United States, it will be transformed to accommodate less dangerous inmates who will receive education, training and rehabilitation, California authorities said Thursday.

Inmates facing death sentences at San Quentin State Prison will be transferred to other jails in the California prison system, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced, renaming it the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center.

The governor plans a visit to Saint Quentinwhich is also the facility where prisoners were formerly executed, although no one has been sentenced to death since 2006 in California.

Newsom announced a moratorium on executions in 2019 and dismantled the prison’s gas chamber, and in 2022 announced plans to begin transferring death row inmates to other prisons.
