The singer Rosalía will be in charge of choosing the songs that will be part of the Piromusical, the music and fireworks show that closes the La Mercè festivities in Barcelona. This was announced on Thursday by the City Council, during the presentation of the festivities programme at the Palau de la Virreina. The Councillor for Culture, Xavier Mercè, has emphasised the importance of Casablanca as the guest city: “It is essential that our city be an example of integration. We want to make known the cultural diversity that the Moroccan community brings to Barcelona.”
In the context of the America’s Cup, which is still underway, the organisation of La Mercè wanted to give prominence to the new Olympic Port with the celebration of the Cultural Regatta. The port reopened its doors last July after the completion of the renovations. However, the City Council wanted to expand the programme to other areas of the city such as Trinitat Vella, in the district of Nou Barris, where urban dance shows will take place and which in previous editions did not enjoy such visibility.
The head of Cultural Programmes at ICUB, Anna Lleó, wanted to highlight the Mercè Arts de Carrer (MAC) as the main pillar of the festivities, which will have 300 performances by 75 companies and seven venues. The guiding thread of the MAC will revolve around four axes: excellence, diversity, female creation and convergence between young talent and the experience of veterans. “We will focus as much as possible on gender identity, multiculturalism and young talent,” concluded Lleó.
