American actor Robert Morse, known for his participation in the series Mad Men, has died at 90 years old. It was a message posted on Twitter by the producer and screenwriter Larry Karaszewski, one of the vice presidents of the Hollywood Academy, who announced the death of the interpreter. “My good friend Bobby Morse passed away at 90 years old. “A great talent and a beautiful spirit,” Karaszewski, who worked with him in 2016 on the series, explained this Thursday. He was the man who embodied, always with a bow tie and never with shoes, Bertram Cooper, one of the founders of Sterling Cooper, the advertising agency for which Don Draper worked in the AMC series. His character used to wear socks and made everyone who entered his office do the same.

The vocation of Morse, born in Massachusetts in 1931 and trained with the acting teacher Lee Strasberg, was always live acting. After participating in the Korean War as a member of the US Navy, he began his career on stage. He first succeeded on Broadway as Barnaby Tucker in The matchmakerlibretto that was the seed of the musical Hello, Dolly! and whose character he also played years later in its film version.
It was Truman Capote who gave him some of his greatest professional joys. And not because the actor interpreted any of his texts, but because he embodied the writer in theater and on television. He won a Tony Award in 1989 for the montage Tru and won an Emmy in 1993 for the television adaptation of this script, in the anthology series American Playhouse of the American public channel PBS. She earned her next five Emmy nominations for her role in Mad Men.
One of his most celebrated performances came in the early 1960s. She played ambitious businessman J. Pierpont Finch in the Broadway musical How to succeed without hitting. The work achieved such success that it had John F. Kennedy himself among its spectators. “He came backstage and shook my hand. He sent me a beautiful, beautiful photo, (with the dedication) ‘With my best wishes, John F. Kennedy.’ Those are the memories I keep now because, as you get older, sometimes you think ‘Oh my God, I haven’t done anything in my life.’ And then you go to IMDb—arts database—and look at everything you’ve done and say, ‘Hey, be proud of yourself,’” Morse commented in 2019 to Los Angeles Times.
As happened so many other times in his career, when his success on stage opened the doors of film and television, he returned to this character in David Swift’s big screen adaptation of the play in 1967.
