Red Bull technical advisor Helmut Marko was once again in the eye of the hurricane after some controversial statements about the Mexican Sergio “Checo” Pérez for which he was accused of discrimination against the pilot.

In an interview for Servus TV’s Sport & Talk, Marko highlighted Pérez’s second place in the Italian Grand Prix, but attributed his performance to his roots. “The Italian GP was surely one of Checo Pérez’s best weekends and we know of his problems in qualifying, which is where he has his hesitations”, he stated.

In this sense, Helmut Marko assured that these problems are due to the fact that “Checo” Pérez does not have mental strength like other pilots because he is “South American”.

“Let’s remember that he is South American and that is why his head is not as focused as Max Verstappen’s or Sebastian Vettel’s.; but racing is his forte and he had a very good race, ”said the former Austrian driver.

However, Marko stressed that “passing three drivers, George Russell and the Ferrari guys, was not easy, we knew that they were faster on the straights. But in the race, Pérez did everything right and now circuits like Singapore are coming, which he has already won and which are better for him”.

In August 2022, the Red Bull adviser was also accused of discrimination against Sergio Pérez, being the first time he called him “South American”, despite the fact that Mexico belongs to North America.

“As a South American, he generally has a lot of ups and downs,” Helmut Marko said in an interview with Sky Germany.
