‘The useless ones’
Fellini’s third film clearly showed some of the Italian master’s constant themes. Fellini proposes a bloody, cruel and corrosive comedy, which mercilessly attacks a society that hides its decomposition behind its appearance of frivolity. The portrait of five young bourgeois (played by five of the greatest Italian comic actors), who pride themselves on their supposed comicality, lazy, quarrelsome and unpleasant jokers, is filmed with a commendable visual sense, to which Fellini adds a bitter sense of humor and a hidden cynicism that is devastating.

‘Imitation of life’
These may not be good times to claim melodrama, but Douglas Sirk’s work shows it as a living and accurate genre. Imitation of Life is an anti-racist tale and a story of afflicted beings invaded by love and suffering. It is also a sublime portrait of a society sustained by double standards.
