The technical director of the Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara, Veljko Paunovic, could be immersed in a drastic controversy by announcing that he will not allow his players to be part of the Mexican National Team in case of a possible call from Diego Cocca for the friendly match that the Tri will star in against the United States team on April 19.
The Serbian strategist maintained that the Sacred Flock is going through a decisive moment in the current Clausura 2023 tournament of the MX League, so the priority for the Guadalajara team is to emerge victorious in each of the four games that remain to enter the Repechage and later to the Liguilla of the Aztec championship.
“I don’t like to get ahead of the facts, you have to wait to see that list and see who can be called (to the National Team)in the event that anyone is called, of course this would change the availability of our squad, and at a moment in the championship that is already decisive,” Paunovic said at a press conference.
On the last FIFA Date, Diego Cocca summoned Fernando Beltrán, Gilberto Sepúlveda and Roberto Alvarado, so it is very possible that they will be summoned again for this international event. Despite this, the Serbian coach recalled that this commitment is not considered a FIFA Date, so he is not obliged to send any of his players to be part of the international match.
“In this regard, you have to see when the time comes, make the decisions, and look for what it is that we are really representing here. At the end of the season we need all the available players, to the maximum and if we have them in our team we have to have them at our disposal, I also understand that there are other events that can affect that situation, but to be honest, FIFA determines very clearly the dates for when the players have to let go with the selection. When we are playing the last stretch of the season, I think we should have the best players with us, we’ll see what happens later”, he highlighted.
Regarding the team’s performance, Paunovic assured that they are working to reinforce the defensive level, which has become one of the weaknesses of the squad in recent games, conceding a total of seven goals.
“We seek to improve where we have had less efficiency, we seek to improve in both areas, we improve in arrivals in the opposite area, goals and opportunities generated, but we have stopped being efficient in defense”, he concluded.
