Rick Riordan always despised the Percy Jackson film adaptations
Although the momentum of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – 80% and its sequels was very good and allowed other companies to have ambitions with similar products, it also caused many problems because everyone tried to follow the same line and to do so they sacrificed those aspects that made these other sagas something very special. This is exactly what happened with Riordan’s work that seemed quite superficial and empty in the films starring Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario and Brandon T. Jackson. Although the audience received the cast well, the plot was not up to par, and that is something that the author regretted from the beginning.
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief – 49% and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters – 42% were a big failure with critics and the public, but especially among fans of the novels who were upset with several of the decisions that were made for the adaptation, such as altering the age of the protagonists or completely changing the personality of Percy Jackson. This point was especially discussed by readers, since the very message of the saga is that those things that seem like defects can really be our greatest virtues, something that Riordan intends to return to with the series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians which will premiere on Disney Plus.

When the mythological stories came to an end, the author decided to create a character like his son who would go through many adventures and discover his place in the world with all his unique strengths, which led to the first Percy novel. After seeing how his work in the film adaptations ended, the writer was very relieved when things did not go well for the production company and it was decided to end the franchise early. After several years, Riordan decided to develop his own version that would ensure a fair representation of his characters and offered an idea to Disney, which immediately accepted and gave the green light to the series. Although the creator is not responsible for every detail of the production, he did work closely with Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, shorunners of the show.
