The Oscars ceremony celebrates its 96th edition this Sunday, March 10. The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, home of the awards since 2002, will host dozens of stars who take advantage of the event as a showcase. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will repeat as presenter, bringing him four galas (2017, 2018 and 2023) as host. Demands from the scriptwriters regarding the strike that stopped the sector from July to November of last year are expected in the speeches.

The Spanish representation is counted in two, with the presence of The Snow Society ―nominated for Best International Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling― by Juan Antonio Bayona, and Robot Dreams (candidate for Best Animated Film) by Pablo Berger. Latin America will also have its delegation with the Chilean director Maite Alberdi, nominated for documentary film of the year thanks to The infinite memory, and the Mexican director of photography Rodrigo Prieto, candidate for his work in The assassins of the moon, by Martin Scorsese.

This year’s favorites

Oppenheimer is emerging as the big winner of the night, not only for being the most nominated (13 nominations), but for having swept the awards season. The biographical film about the creator of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, has won best film at the Golden Globes – in the drama section -, at the Critic’s Choice and at the Baftas (the British Academy Film Awards). , and has dominated the union awards. In addition to the queen category, it is also a favorite in the best actor (Cillian Murphy) and best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), not to mention the technical sections.

However, there are years when the Academy becomes infatuated and surprises, like the year of moonlight, when the great candidate was La La Land, or that of Green Book, that triumphed over Rome. The main alternative is poor creatures, with 11 nominations, and Those who staycandidate for five.

Oscar Awards schedule

The red carpet will begin at 10:00 p.m. in Spain and the gala at midnight from Sunday to Monday the 11th. The ceremonies have an average duration of three and a half hours, so they are scheduled to end at 3:30 a.m.

In Latin America and the Caribbean it can be seen on TNT and HBO Max. In Mexico the gala will also be seen on open television, through TV Azteca.

In addition, you can follow the Oscar night on the website of EL PAÍS, which has prepared special coverage with a live broadcast that will provide up-to-the-minute information about the red carpet, the gala and the celebration of the winners.

Presenters

As is tradition, statuette winners in other years will announce the winners of the night. Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis will be present. In addition, the Academy has confirmed the presence of stars such as Al Pacino, Michele Pfeiffer, Nicolas Cage, Bad Bunny, Dwayne Johnson, Jennifer Lawrence, Steven Spielberg and Anya Taylor-Joy, among others.

Another tradition is that the songs of the five nominees for best original song are performed. Becky G will sing The Fire Within (of the movie Flamin Hot: The Story of Hot Cheetos); Ryan Gosling will do the same with I’m Just Ken (Barbie), while Billie Elish will be responsible for the film’s other nominated song, What Was I Made For?; Jon Batiste will sing It Never Went Away (American Symphony), and Wahzhazhe (The Moon Killers) by Scott George and the Osage Singers.
