Dozens of people were injured Friday in a massive pile-up that occurred in snowy conditions in southern Wisconsin, disrupting traffic for several hours on Interstate 39/90, authorities said.
Beloit Memorial Hospital said at least 27 people were treated for injuries sustained in the incident, according to WIFR-TV. The extent of the injuries to those affected was not immediately known, the station said.
State Patrol officials claimed that snow, ice and icy conditions were factors in the crash.
A winter weather advisory remained in effect Friday afternoon for most of southern Wisconsin with more snow forecast for Saturday.
The pileup occurred around 12:30 p.m. in Rock County between Janesville and Beloit, the State Patrol said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
Upon arrival, troopers found the interstate highway blocked in both directions.
The patrol cars diverted the traffic to alternative roads. The southbound lanes were reopened shortly after 8 p.m., the State Patrol said on Twitter.
WIFR-TV broadcast video from the scene shortly before 4 p.m. showing stranded tractor-trailers while emergency personnel helped motorists.
The Beloit area accumulated 6 centimeters (2.2 inches) of snow in the last 24 hours until 6 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.
The State Patrol said in a separate statement that another pile-up that happened around 1:30 p.m. blocked northbound Interstate 41 in Kenosha County, near the Wisconsin-Illinois border.
The lanes reopened at 7:35 p.m. Snow, ice and frost conditions also played a role in what happened, according to the State Patrol.
