The mother of the 6-year-old boy who shot his first-grade teacher at a Virginia elementary school earlier this year she was charged with felony child neglect and recklessly leaving a firearm that endangers a child.

Deja Nicole Taylor, 25, whose son shot Abby Zwerner during a class at Richneck Elementary School on January 6, was indicted by a grand jury in Newport News on Monday, the Daily Press reported.

In addition, the investigation could impact the response of school administrators following the incident.

“Their investigation will continue as long as necessary to determine if others are criminally responsible for the January 6 shooting,” the Newport News Commonwealth Prosecutor’s Office said.

Millionaire lawsuit in the middle of the process

The recent allegation comes just a week after Zwerner filed a $40 million lawsuit against the Newport News school division, alleging that staff ignored multiple warning signs.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Newport News Circuit Court, names three school officials: Richneck Elementary Assistant Principal Ebony Parker, former School Superintendent George Parker III and former Principal Briana Foster.

Assistant Principal Parker was indicted for breaching a duty to protect Zwerner, Parker III was removed from her position as school superintendent following a school board vote, while former Principal Newton was transferred to another position within the school district.

An earlier affidavit made by the parents of the 6-year-old boy, whose identity was not released, said the firearm had been “secured” at their home, arguing that the boy is acutely disabled. They noted that although they accompanied the child to school every day, that week was the first in which they did not attend with him.
