It had to happen. Personal computers (PCs) have undergone sustained evolution in recent years, gradually gaining in capacity and efficiency. Until artificial intelligence has arrived. This Monday in the United States, Microsoft began the revolution of home and work devices announcing Copilot+ PC, a new range of Windows available next June 18, 200 times more powerful and 100 times more efficient to incorporate artificial intelligence. The computer records all activity to recover it with a simple voice command, it is capable of creating all types of files without depending on the Internet, it translates calls simultaneously and, of course, it includes a shortcut key to ChatGPT-4o. The company itself, Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Samsung have already announced models with Copilot +, which will have an average cost of about 1,000 euros.

“This next-generation PC unlocks new levels of computing performance,” said Tae Moon Roh (TM Roh), President and Head of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics after announcing its Galaxy Book4 Edge with Copilot+ model. The new computers can execute 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) while maintaining battery life throughout the day.

Recall. The new devices incorporate a photographic memory that records all activity on a timeline so that it can be recovered with a simple voice command. In this way, you can return to the page you visited first thing or pick up an email lost in the flood of messages or remember a past conversation or recover the version of a file. By operating locally, Recall does not perform content moderation or hide confidential information such as passwords or account numbers, as Microsoft warns on its FAQ page. However, all computers include Microsoft Pluton Security, a Windows 11 update to strengthen user security and personalized privacy controls.

Co-creator. It is the evolution of Image Creator, the cloud image generator accessible through the Internet, which had certain limitations. Now, computers have neural processing units so that, with language models smaller than LLM, they can create or process visual files based on oral instructions.

Live Captions. Subtitle any audio from over 40 languages live or recorded and from any app or video platform to offline English subtitles.

Windows Studio. Automatically improves the image and sound captured by the webcam.

Copilot Agent. It facilitates access to the most advanced AI models including the agent presented last week by Open AI, ChatGPT-4o.

To make PCs smarter, Microsoft has innovated everything from the processors (chips) to the operating system, an update that the company considers “the most significant milestone on the Windows platform in decades.”

In this way, the traditional computer engines (CPU and GPU) are joined by a neural processing unit (NPU) and a new architecture to facilitate the use of both large and small language models, which feed artificial intelligence. both in the cloud and on devices.

The first devices will have Qualcomm Oryon Snapdragon processors, but the giant Intel has announced the arrival of its Lunar Lake processors by Q3 2024. These will join more than 80 new laptop designs from more than 20 OEMs with PC Copilot+

“We are at an inflection point where the PC will accelerate AI innovation. We believe that richer experiences will only be possible when the cloud and the device work together. “Hand in hand with our partners, we are laying the foundation for the next decade of innovation in Windows,” said Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and director of Consumer Marketing at Microsoft.
