McDonald’s announced that 31 Hispanic students in the United States are embarking on their university path, after receiving a total of half a million dollars as beneficiaries of the HACER National Scholarship.
HACER was founded in 1985 by McDonald’s and has become one of the largest programs with college scholarships and resources for Hispanics, awarding more than $33 million dollars to more than 17,000 students nationwide.
Now in its 38th year, the scholarship program continues to provide educational opportunities to help reduce the gap that exists for Hispanic students who want to go to college.
Recent studies have revealed a promising trend showing that the number of Hispanic students seeking to pursue a college education It is increasing steadily year after year.
Projections indicate that by 2026, university enrollment among Hispanics will exceed 4 million students, with a growth rate that will exceed any other racial or ethnic group by more than 10%. However, despite this upward trend in enrollment, there remains a persistent disparity at four-year colleges, where the graduation rate for Hispanics is 13% lower than that of their non-Hispanic white peers.
According to a 2021 Pew Research Center survey, the top reasons cited by the majority of Hispanic students without a college degree and who are not currently enrolled in an educational institution are need to contribute to the financial support of their families and the inability to afford a four-year university degree.
“Everyone deserves a chance to pursue their dreams.. “We recognize the financial obstacles that many students and their families face in pursuing a college education, which is why McDonald’s and our Hispanic Owner/Operators remain committed to investing in and promoting educational opportunities,” said Richard Castro, a McDonald’s Owner/Operator and
president of the national HACER scholarship.
