The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) is getting closer to naming Marcelo Bielsa as the new technical director of the Uruguayan team for what will be the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers that will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, so it is presumed that the official appointment could take place in the next few hours.
The information was revealed by journalists Federico Buysan and César Luis Merlo, who explained that Marcelo Bielsa will be the new strategist for the sky-blues to become Diego Alonso’s successor; This decision is due to the fact that the AUF expects to have a better performance than that shown in the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where they were surprisingly eliminated from the group stage of the tournament.
“There is an economic agreement between Marcelo Bielsa and the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) so that the contract can be drawn up and signed in the coming days that links him as a coach of the Uruguayan team until 2026″, detailed Buysan.
“CONFIRMED. Marcelo Bielsa is the new coach of the Uruguayan team. The agreement is complete and is expected to be made official in the coming days. He will sign a contract until the end of the Qualifiers with the chance to extend if he qualifies for the World Cup, ”said Merlo.
According to information from various AUF executives to both communicators, Bielsa’s announcement is expected to be made officially between April 14 and 17.
The arrival of the Argentine in Uruguay will serve for the new generational change that is expected to begin for the new World Cup cycleespecially due to the possible absence of great figures such as Luis Suárez and Edison Cavani, who due to their age would possibly be out of the squad for the 2026 World Cup.
