EXHIBITIONS

Teachers

When: Until Sunday, February 4, 2024

Where: Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum – Madrid (Paseo del Prado, 8)

One of the greatest tributes to the emancipation of women from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. A journey that makes us navigate art from a female perspective, its struggle to stand out within a patriarchal system and that combination of sensitivity, sensuality and courage of great women when it comes to expressing their way of conceiving history through art. art.

The exhibition includes approximately a hundred pieces, visitors will be able to see paintings, sculptures, works on textiles and paper, among others. During the tour you can see the artistic expressions of great masters such as Angelica Kauffmann, Artemisia Gentileschi, Rosa Bonheur, Clara Peeters, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, María Blanchard, Natalia Goncharova, Sonia Delaunay, among others.

The exhibition is divided into eight sections, below we briefly tell you about each of them:

  • Sorority I. The cause Delle Donne: Through different paintings, women reflect in art the silence to which they were subjected by a patriarchal system in the 17th century.
  • Botanicals. Connoisseurs of wonders: a look at those women in the most scientific field, who conceive life itself as an ecosystem where different creatures such as flies or butterflies live. A time of splendor for those pioneering masters of still life and botanical illustration.
  • Illustrated and academic: Feminine power is beginning to be reflected in the genre of portraiture, they are all cultured women who seek and find identity in artistic expression.
  • Orientalism/costumbrismo: The artists begin to travel and come face to face with the harsh reality of the sexualization of their pieces by their male peers. A new era is approaching, they can now access harems, breaking down that erotic stereotype.
  • Work and care: The women continue their fight, this time representing the female worker side and claiming that space in turn. You can see portraits of peasant women, fisherwomen or ironers.
  • New maternities: The artists oppose the archetype of motherhood that emerged in the 19th century, this is how they represent not only the connection of a mother with her child, but also the domestic work, effort and dedication of this role.
  • Sorority II. Complicities: The trust and friendship between women, those conversations and thoughts where the desire for freedom was the protagonist, is portrayed in a private and melancholic way.
  • Emancipated: This section reflects the complicity between women to carve out a place for themselves in the artistic world, a place that would allow them to continue telling their truth about history and their way of conceiving the world. All of this happened in the 20th century, that time when the right to women’s suffrage was achieved in many Western countries.

The exhibition, which will be available until February 4, 2024 in the art gallery, can be visited at the following times: Tuesday to Friday and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum awaits you, so you can buy tickets now to see this and other temporary exhibitions for 13 euros.
