This Wednesday the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, affirmed that China and its government have an important role to assume in the peace process that the West seeks in Ukraine. The Russian and Chinese governments maintain close ties, which has raised suspicions from the United States and its allies that there is military cooperation between the two countries.
Macron, who is on a trip to China, announced last Tuesday that he will formally request that China not supply weapons to the Russian Army, which according to the intelligence services of the United States would be being discussed by Russia and China. Even so, the main objective of the French president is to ask his Chinese counterpart to help find a path that leads to the end of the war in the medium term.
“China, within its close relationship with Russia, reaffirmed in recent days, can play an important role in resolving the war (…) China showed its commitment to the United Nations Charter, territorial integrity and sovereignty of nationsMacron said at an event with the French community in China.
Macron also highlighted the 12-step proposal for peace presented by China in February, which has been endorsed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and has raised the interest of kyiv and Moscow. Macron considered that dialogue with China is essential, defending that the European Union cannot leave the exclusivity of communication with other Europeans.
In addition to that, the European president said last week that within this conversation the consequences that China could suffer if it is willing to collaborate with the war in favor of the Russians. Macron is also expected to invite Chinese President Xi Jinping to meet his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Since last February, there has been an expectation that the two leaders will hold a meeting to discuss the peace agreement. However, China has not shown interest in the existence of a meeting between Volodimir Zelenski and Xi Jinping.
