“I don’t come from a family of artists,” is one of the phrases Kenia Guadalupe Flores Osuna (Mazatlán, 24 years old), better known as Kenia Os, repeats most often when she reflects on where she is now in her career. She says that she started from the bottom without help, without shortcuts, without contacts. Her agenda includes concerts in different states of Mexico and in November she will perform at the iconic venue in Mexico City, the Palacio de los Deportes, where she announced a new date after selling out the first one. Kenia Os does not touch the sky with her hands, she has completely crossed it, like many young Mexican artists recently.
He first ventured as influencerShe recorded her first video on January 1, 2018. She edited it herself and left in unexpected interruptions: a car driving by with a loud engine and people playing “drunk” music, as she describes in the same clip that had 10,000 views. An unusual figure for content released by someone for the first time. The good start was an omen.
Over the next four years she released many singles experimenting with different genres such as rap, Latin urban, electronic pop. “It was not until I got to my first album, Moon changeswhen I realized the identity I was going to have as an artist,” she says from a cafe in the Condesa neighborhood, a bohemian and chic neighborhood, a favorite of digital nomads in the Mexican capital, where everything is pink, even the dress she wears. A very appropriate place for the promotion of her new album. Pink Aurareleased in April 2024. “I didn’t like the color pink at all; I interpreted it as weakness. With this album I changed my perspective on color, my energy, how I move in my work, who I am, and the value and respect I give myself every day,” she says.
Kenia Os welcomes various media outlets to talk about the album and gives each one 10 minutes. Before giving her first interview of the day, she has a long conversation with someone from her team. More than a conversation, it is a monologue from the person accompanying her. The singer remains quiet, serious, attentive and thoughtful. The dialogue is imperceptible. When she finishes, she immediately welcomes EL PAÍS; she answers kindly and smiling, although it is obvious that her thoughts are elsewhere, perhaps still digesting what she was told.
Historic record for the Mexican
Pink Aura was a hit on Spotify. It broke the record for the most listened to album in one day on the platform by a Latin American artist. It features collaborations with La Joaqui, an Argentine singer; Bella Poarch, an American internet celebrity; Yeri Mua, influencer Mexican; Ghetto Kids, a Mexican reggaeton music group. A few months earlier he participated in Tommy and Pamela with Peso Pluma, but none of them compare to the collaboration with Thalía. “It came at a time in my career when I wasn’t expecting it,” she says, a smile slowly appearing. “It was really nice to receive the support of such a great artist.”
In 2023, he released the short film K23 Universe in which he presents some songs from his second album, K23interspersed with reflections from the singer. In one of them she muses on the idea of giving up pieces that needed to go and that maybe someone else will find them and they will be what they needed to continue on their path. “The fragments that I have found today to continue are the love of my family and the people around me, the love of my fans, the excitement of seeing that things start to happen.” She also recognizes that her personal circle is becoming smaller and smaller, but “those are the people who need to be there.”
This is Kenia Os’ third album. According to her label, it represents her most explicit side, an alter ego they call flow rich mommy“I am more calm,” she reflects. “These public figures that people see, these characters, are a mix of everything that I am taken to the extreme”.
