Jane’s Addiction cancels tour and splits up again after singer and guitarist fight on stage | Culture

On Friday night, Jane’s Addiction played in Boston. The concert was another stop on the tour that the Los Angeles band, with almost four decades of history, breakups and reconciliations, started a few months ago with four of its original members. However, a fight on stage between their vocalist, Perry Farrell, against the guitarist, Dave Navarro, has now ended with the return of the rockers. The group has announced on their social networks not only that they are cancelling their next concert, as they had announced at first, but their entire tour, and that they will not continue together either.

In a brief statement Posted on social media on Monday morning (US time), the band says: “To all fans. The band has made the difficult decision to take some time apart as a group. As such, we will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.” It then explains that ticket money will be returned to fans: “Refunds for cancelled dates will be made at the point of sale, or if it was a third party reseller such as StubHub, SeatGeek… please contact them directly.” Finally, they thank you and sign off as Jane’s Addiction, without any particular names. On their website The dates for the remaining 15 concerts of the tour, called Imminent Redemption but, when trying to access the purchase, Ticketmaster already reports that it has been cancelled by the organizers.

In addition, Navarro himself has also posted another statement. “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our lead singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to end our current relationship.” tour “We are very concerned for their health and safety, as well as our own, and we are deeply sorry that we will not be able to serve all of the fans who have already purchased tickets. We see no solution that will ensure a safe stage environment or allow us to put on a great show every night,” the guitarist wrote in a statement, signed as “Dave, Eric (Avery, bass) and Stephen (Perkins, drums).”

It all got complicated on Friday, during the Boston concert. At one point in the evening, Farrell, the leader and vocalist, approached Navarro, the guitarist, and gave him what seemed to be a sideways blow. However, from the way he was positioned, with his chest puffed out, and from his face, Farrell was angry: it was not a joke between colleagues. He approached Navarro again, who tried to keep him away, stopping him with his right hand while he continued trying to play the guitar with his left, and confronted him, in words that the audience did not hear and in which the singer was seen to be very angry. Navarro avoided getting involved, but Farrell continued to rage, trying to hit the guitarist. Seconds later, another member of the team approached to try to calm things down and separate him, and in the end there were three of them who had to drag the singer off the stage. Then, the lights went out and the concert ended.

Over the weekend, the band announced that it was cancelling its next show, which was scheduled to take place on Sunday in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The next show was scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada, on Wednesday, but it has been cancelled, along with the rest of the tour, which was scheduled to end on October 16 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, California, the city where the band was formed in 1985.

The group was born in the Pacific city 39 years ago, and Farrell and Navarro were always among its original members, along with drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery. Farrell named the band after his roommate, named Jane Bainter. They started out in small venues in the city, moving on to larger ones, and their success even led them to festivals, and then they recorded their first album, Nothing’s Shockinga couple of years later. Their journey lasted six years, until 1991, when they decided to split up after three albums and a long tour of more than a year that took its toll on all of them, and especially after a concert at Lollapalooza where, precisely, Farrell and Navarro fought on stage, hitting each other, and in which the guitarist ended up throwing his instrument into the audience.

They then continued with their own projects, returning briefly in 1997 and later with a tour between 2001 (when they recorded their album). Strays) and 2003, to split up again in mid-2004. Four years later they got back together and later, in the summer of 2009, went on another tour with the band Nine Inch Nails, and gave some concerts until mid-2011, the year in which they released their last studio album, The Great Escape Artist. This May 2024 they had returned to the stage in London, with a tour of Europe (with two concerts in Spain in June, in Vitoria and Madrid) and the United States that took them to play in almost 40 venues, and of which they still had another 15 concerts to give.
