Residents of the southeast coast of the United States may have to battle a rainy Memorial Day weekend due to a low pressure system approaching the area.
The system could acquire characteristics of a subtropical storm or tropicalreported The Weather Channel.
Unstable weather would affect areas from Florida to Virginiaand mainly during the beginning of the weekend, confirmed the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
Weather models suggest that the area of low pressure could form later this week somewhere off the coast of FloridaGeorgia or the Carolinas
The system is not expected to move quickly, so it could linger along the coast before moving ashore in the Carolinas and Virginia over the weekend. or continue drifting towards the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Hurricane season officially begins June 1.. As forecast by Colorado State University (CSU) meteorologists 13 named storms expected for hurricane season in the Atlantic this 2023.
“Of these 13 storms, researchers expect six to become hurricanes.and that at least two reach a higher category (Saffir/Simpson category 3-4-5) with sustained winds of up to more than 111 miles per hour (178 km/h),” the CSU detailed in a statement.
Precisely, the area of low pressure forecast for the next few days will settle in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. When that happens, experts monitor the systems for development potential.
Wind shear, which is the change in wind speed and/or direction with height, is expected to remain strong along the East Coast. That is why it is not ruled out that the system becomes a subtropical depression or storm.
If it became a subtropical or tropical storm, it would bear the name “Arlene.”
But regardless of whether this happens or not, the risk of rain is latent.
Chances for fewer rainy spells are for the Virginia Tidewater region to the south in Florida; while the heaviest and most frequent rain would be affecting the Outer Banks in North Carolinacoastal Georgia and northeast Florida.
