After some time, Toho is back with a new production about its most famous kaiju and social networks are completely ready for the gift. Godzilla, created by the Japanese company Toho, is an icon of Japanese cinema and a global pop culture phenomenon. Godzilla’s story in Toho originates from the 1954 film of the same name directed by Ishiro Honda. In this production, Godzilla is presented as a giant radioactive monster that awakens from the depths of the ocean to terrorize Japan. The original film was heavily influenced by the aftermath of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and Godzilla symbolized both nuclear fears and the horrors of radiation. Some of the more notable include Mothra, a gigantic moth with godlike powers; Rodan, a flying pterosaur with destructive abilities; King Ghidorah, a fearsome three-headed dragon; Mechagodzilla, a cyborg built to take on Godzilla; Gigan, a cybernetic monster with deadly blades and claws; and Destoroyah, a mutant creature that poses a deadly threat. These kaijus, along with many others, have appeared in various Toho films, taking on Godzilla or starring in their own stories, thus contributing to the richness and diversity of the kaiju universe and its influence on Japanese and international popular culture.

But Hollywood is not far behind when it comes to Godzilla adaptations. The history of Godzilla in the United States began in 1998 with the film directed by Roland Emmerich, which featured a radically different take on the iconic Japanese monster. However, this adaptation was not well received by fans or critics. Then, in 2014, Legendary Pictures released a remake that tried to stay truer to the original spirit of Godzilla and establish a shared cinematic universe called the MonsterVerse, which includes movies like Kong: Skull Island – 76% and Godzilla II: King of the Monsters – 41%. This new series of Godzilla films has been by far more successful and respectful of the legacy of the Japanese monster, continuing to explore his influence on pop culture and the threats he poses to humanity in a modern context.
