“It’s time to shine.” With this phrase, in English, Apple announced the presentation of the iPhone 16, which will be this Monday at seven in the evening (Spanish peninsular time). The leaks indicate that the Cupertino company will present four models, just like in the iPhone 15 range. In addition to showing the predecessors of Some of the best-selling mobile phones on the planetleaks suggest that it will also seek to ‘shine’ with the AirPods 4 and three new watches: the Apple Watch Series 10 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and the updated Apple Watch SE.
Everything seems to indicate that Apple has opted for a continuous design and the same size for the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. But the most powerful iPhones will have even bigger screensaccording to the screen industry analyst Ross Young. The iPhone 16 Pro would theoretically have a 6.27-inch display and the iPhone 16 Pro Max a 6.86-inch display —compared to the 6.1 and 6.7 inches of its predecessors—. If confirmed, the Pro Max’s screen size would be the largest in iPhone history.
A decision that, if confirmed, would be difficult to justify is that of Do not bring the 120 Hz refresh rate to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus screen —which the Pro models do incorporate and which other companies have been betting on for their high-end mobiles for years—. This parameter refers to the number of times the screen is updated per second. The higher it is, the more fluid the experience will be: animations will be perceived more realistically and movement between different screens or applications will be smoother. Some leaks suggest that the refresh rate of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus screen will still be 60Hz.
If there is one device that Apple is proud of, it is photography. The Cupertino company wants to boost the capabilities of its new iPhones with a physical button on one of its sides, according to leaks. With it, it hopes to make taking photos easier and bring the experience closer to using a traditional camera. It is also expected that the action button will reach all models – until now it was only on the Pro models. This button is used to activate or mute the sound, open the mobile camera, the recorder, a concentration mode or the flashlight.
Improvements in the photographic section
Leaks suggest that the main camera sensor will be the same across all models. A lower aperture could bring improvements in low-light performance. There are also rumors of a revamped ultra-wide sensor with support for macro mode. The iPhone 16 Pro could also feature the tetraprism telephoto lens currently found on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The crown jewel will be the iPhone 16 Pro Max, which will apparently feature a super-telephoto lens designed to transform zoom and autofocus.
Apple has reportedly tweaked the camera modules on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus. According to leaks, the lenses have adopted a vertical arrangement similar to that of the iPhone 12 — rather than the diagonal one of the newer models. If Apple does end up changing the camera layout on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, it’s very likely that most cases designed for the older models won’t fit properly.
The new iPhones are expected to feature the A18 chip. We’ll have to wait and see if Apple makes a distinction between the base and Pro models. Some leaks suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will feature a more powerful version of the processor — the A18 Pro. Rumors indicate that this processor could have more cores, significant improvements in graphics capabilities, and possibly some extra functionality related to Apple Intelligence to justify the Pro label.
Apple was late to jump on the generative AI bandwagon. The Cupertino company detailed its plans to enter the AI race in June 2024 at its annual developer conference, WWDC 2024. While Apple’s new AI leaves out more than 90% of current iPhone users, the new iPhones are expected to be fully optimized for AI, making them the best prepared in this area.
Leaks indicate that Apple has supposedly made improvements to the size of iPhone batteries and their technologies, which would translate into longer battery life. It has also supposedly optimized charging speeds, reaching up to 40W wired and 20W wireless charging. Rumor has it that the new iPhone models could offer storage options of up to 2TB, which would be a significant increase from the current limit of 1TB.
In addition to the new iPhone 16, Apple is rumored to be launching new watches. According to major leaks, it will introduce an Apple Watch Series 10, an Apple Watch Ultra 3, and the updated Apple Watch SE. The apple company may have prepared a redesign of the Apple Watch Series 10 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its watches. In addition to screens slightly larger and a slimmer designit is rumored that this watch will debut a new magnetic attachment system for its straps. This could cause some controversy, since it would be the first time that older straps do not work with the new watches.
Apple also appears to be planning to release two versions of the AirPods 4: a more affordable one with fewer features and another with more possibilities. For example, the high-end model is expected to include active noise cancellation and a charging case compatible with MagSafe, a wireless charging system developed by Apple. The company could also be preparing updates for the iPad Mini and the Basic iPad, although there have been no major leaks. While some rumors indicate that Apple could announce new countries in which it will sell the Vision Pro – its virtual reality glasses – it seems unlikely that they will reach Spain. On this occasion, Apple is also not expected to present new models of Mac computers, since each year it usually reserves these announcements for a specific event in the fall.
