EMMERYVILLE, Calif. – On June 16, “Elemental” will be released, an animated film by pixar written and directed by Peter Sohna veteran of the studio from which masterpieces such as “Toy Story”, “Coco” or “Up” have come out.
We had the opportunity to visit Pixar in Northern California to take a look at some scenes from the film and talk with its creators. These are 10 things that caught our attention about “Elemental”:
1. Pixar never ceases to amaze us. The characters in “Elemental” are made of the four elements: water, air, earth, and fire..
2. The protagonists are an immigrant family. They arrive in Element City from another… planet? In any case, they are fire in a new city where the highest social class is water. It doesn’t look like they’re going to have it easy. And how do they plan to earn a living? Opening a store in a neighborhood to serve their own community. A story that many immigrant families from different cultures can identify with.
3. Ember, a young woman of fire, meets Wade, of water. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like an easy relationship.. But as the film’s director Peter Sohn told us: “Opposites attract.”
4. Sohn and producer Denise Ream have a personal connection to the story.. Sohn’s parents came to New York from Korea in the 1960s and opened a grocery store in the Bronx. Ream is the granddaughter of Irish immigrants and is married to a naturalized immigrant.
5. Pixar has developed the animation of water in previous films, since “Finding Nemo”, but it remains one of the biggest challenges for digital animators. “Water is still a problem in the world of computer-generated images”, assured us Sanjay Bakshi, visual effects expert of “Elemental”. “Water looks like water because it moves like water, not because it looks like water,” says Jeremie Talbot, Pixar’s character developer.
6. Animating the fire is not easy either. Like water, it leaves a trail as it moves that is not easy to reproduce. It is light and gaseous. Ember is not on fire, but on fire. That nuance conditions how to animate the character.
7. To render Pixar’s first feature film, “Toy Story”, 294 computers were used. For “Finding Nemo,” 923. In “Elemental” more than 151 thousand “render farms” were used.
8. In the development of the film, 97,600 storyboards were created. The director, Peter Sohn, began his career as a cartoonist, so many of the drawings used in the process of building this film are his.
9. The people made of fire in “Elemental” have their own language that was invented for the film. It was intended to sound a bit like the noise of fire.
10. One of the scenes shows an airball game., a kind of basketball that is played in the air. The idea is based on the three-dimensional chess from “Star Trek Next Generation,” Sohn explained. Furthermore, during that match the spectators do “the Mexican wave” which, of course, in this case is made of “real” water.
