El Salvador: red alert continues for earthquakes in two municipalities | The USA Print

The authorities of the Civil Protection System of El Salvador reported on Monday that they maintain the red alert in two municipalities in the west of the country bordering Guatemala affected by a series of earthquakes that began on January 15 and have caused damage to more than 800 homes. .

“There is a record of 602 aftershocks with magnitudes between 1.4 and 4.4 registered since Sunday (January 15), when we had two events of greater magnitude,” said the director of Civil Protection, Luis Alonso, at a press conference. He explained that they have a record of more than 800 affected homes, 474 of which have been declared uninhabitable, and the rest with minor damage. He confirmed that no casualties were reported.

He explained that 68 temporary shelters have been set up near the homes where 355 families are being cared for.

The earthquakes caused landslides on the highway that leads to the Las Chinamas border crossing, but the authorities reported that traffic has not been interrupted and work is normal on the border with Guatemala.

Meanwhile, Civil Protection relief brigades, which include firefighters, are holding house cleaning and repair days.

The fire director of El Salvador, Baltazar Solano, who participated in the press conference, asked the inhabitants of San Lorenzo and Ahuachapán and surrounding places to follow the recommendations issued by the authorities to avoid possible tragedies.

For its part, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources reported that seismic activity continues between Guatemalan territory and the municipality of San Lorenzo and that from January 15 to 9:15 local time (1515 GMT) on Monday They had registered 608 earthquakes, two of them with a magnitude greater than 5.
