Egypt would be planning to send tens of thousands of rockets to Russiain an apparent attempt to aid his invasion of Ukraine, top-secret US documents have revealed.
In the leaked documents, quoted by The Washington Postallegedly reveal a series of conversations between the Egyptian president, Abdel Fatah El-Sisi, and his officials in which instructs them to keep secret the production and transfer of weapons, to avoid “problems with the West”.
Total, Egypt ordered the delivery of more than 40,000 rocketsalthough it is unclear if the plan came to fruition.
The Washington Post obtained the document from a series of images of alleged classified files posted in February and March on Discord, a chat app popular with gamers. The document had not been previously reported.
Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, a spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, told the outlet that “Egypt’s position from the beginning is based on not getting involved in this crisis and commit to keeping the same distance with both sides”, when asked about the veracity of the documents.
The Post also spoke with a Biden administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential information:
“We are not aware of any execution of that plan,” referring to the rocket export initiative. “We have not seen that happen,” the official told the outlet.
Egypt, like other US partners in the Middle East, has tried to stay out of Western nations’ standoff with Russia over Ukraine..
If this report is true, it could call into question whether the United States should continue to defend and support Egypt, or to a lesser extent, it could have a negative impact on both nations.
