E.Jean Carrolladvice columnist who won $5 million in sexual abuse and defamation damages against former Republican President Donald Trumpnow is seeking at least $10 million more in a court filing Monday that would seek to hold him accountable for comments he made after the verdict on CNN.
The request for punitive damages was presented in Manhattan by the lawyers of the also journalist, who said that New York tycoon “doubled down” on disparaging comments about Carroll during his TV appearance following the judge’s decision.
“It is hard to imagine defamatory conduct that could possibly be more motivated by hate, ill will or spite,” they wrote of Trump’s comments in a statement. CNN town hall.
“This conduct supports a very substantial punitive damage award in favor of Carroll both to punish Trump, to deter him from committing further defamation, and to deter others from doing the same.”reported POLITICAL.
Carroll’s initial lawsuit had been delayed on appeal and related to statements the former Republican president made while he was still in office. The trial involved a statement Trump made last year.
The author has argued that the former executive raped her in the Bergdorf Goodman department store in the mid-1990s. and then slandered her when she denied her claim, Trump said he wasn’t his type and suggested he made that up to boost sales of his book.
Likewise, the former president denied the claims presented against him and appealed the jury’s decision.
Although jury found Trump sexually abused Carrollenough to charge him with assault, he did not find that she proved that he had raped her.
The Republican was quick to address this aspect of the jury verdict at the CNN town hall hosted in New Hampshire the day after the jury’s decision, stating, “They said, ‘He didn’t rape her.’ And I didn’t do anything else either.”
“I have no idea who this woman is, this is a false story, a made up story”Trump said, calling Carroll a “nutty” and going on a tangent about her ex-husband and their pet cat.
