The Dominican pitcher of the New York Yankees, Francelis “Frankie” Montás, took a new step in her recovery from shoulder surgery to pitch and could be back with the Yankees a few days after the end of the Major League regular season.
Montás saw action for one inning during his return to the mound with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, leaving two strikeouts with one hit and one run allowed in 17 pitchesthis being his first official presentation of this season.
As if that were not enough, the right-hander finished his performance with an average throwing speed of 95.2 miles per hour, demonstrating that the operation has not caused him to lose speed in his throwing arm.
In statements by manager Aaron Boone after this Sunday’s 3-2 defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he assured that although the presence of Montás in the last two weeks of the campaign is possible, he believes it would not be prudent to force it.
“I think it’s a great step for him to return to the mound. (his minor league start) and I know he’s been working very hard,” Boone said.
Montás’ performance is the third phase in the right-hander’s recovery after the arthroscopic surgery he underwent on his right shoulder on February 21for which the Mules placed him on the 60-day injured list at the start of the campaign.
More than three months later, on May 30, he began throwing on flat ground and by mid-July he went to a clinic to make sure his recovery was on track.
Montás came to the Yankees at the 2022 trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics. However, His best performance was not seen with the Yankees when he started for eight games and accumulated a record of 1-3 with an ERA of 6.35 in 39.2 innings of work..
