A video apparently showing two men poisoning three dogs in western Guatemala has sparked outrage in a large part of Guatemalan society who are demanding justice be done.
The population demonstrated on social networks and around 200 people came out on Monday to demonstrate in front of the facilities of a bakery in the department of Quetzaltenango after the population identified the local owners, Orlando and Luis Guzmán, as the two responsible for the death of the three stray dogs known as Negrito, Nucita and Loba.
In the video from the security cameras, two men can be seen walking along a sidewalk with bags in their hands and feeding the three dogs, who died shortly after in the same place.
Through a statement, the company Alimentos Xelapán SA distanced itself from the facts and declared that “it is not responsible for the individual actions of any person who works (in the company), since everyone acts freely and assumes their actions.” He also explained that they are a responsible company with values, but he did not apologize for what happened.
The demonstrators, some of them accompanied by their pets, protested in front of the bakery with slogans of “No to animal abuse!” “They have rights too!” and “Murderers and Justice!”
The Guatemalan Congress approved in 2017 the Animal Protection and Welfare Law, which penalizes animal abuse. The law stipulates among its most serious offenses the poisoning or intoxication of animals, which entails a penalty of up to 12 minimum wages, about $4,300.
In August 2022, a man in the Mexican state of Querétaro was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the poisoning of Athos and Tango, two Mexican Red Cross rescue dogs.
