From an early age, Daniel Marsh proved to be an exceptional child. With an IQ of 114, an inclination towards study and a strong devotion to his family. On one occasion, he saved his father during a heart attack while he was driving. However, upon entering high school, his life gradually began to deviate. Around that time he met Alvaro Garibaywho would become his best friend, confidant and partner in the fight against the depression they both faced.
Daniel Marsh: troubled teenager.
The bond between Daniel and Álvaro strengthened over time, but it also revealed dark aspects of Daniel’s psyche. At a very young age, Daniel Marsh expressed his desire to cause physical harm. He even planned an attack against his mother’s partner when she was only 10 years old. As he progressed through high school, Daniel’s problems intensified. He began self-harming, repeatedly cutting his left arm, and also showed signs of eating disorders that landed him in the hospital.

Besides, faced family challenges with his mother’s diagnosis of schizophrenia and a progressive neurological illness that would ultimately prove fatal. During this period, Daniel Marsh immersed himself in self-destructive behaviors, such as drug use and exposure to violent online content, including “gore porn.” Multiple factors that would contribute to his emotional and psychological deterioration.
Love relationship.
Strangely, while fighting his demons, Daniel established a romantic relationship with a girl at school. Although this relationship was affected by a violent outburst of jealousy when he discovered that she was also friends with Garibay. Upon his release, Daniel displayed increasingly erratic and dangerous behavior, including animal cruelty and planning an attack on her partner’s ex-boyfriend. However, his spiral out of control reached its peak when she perpetrated a heinous crime. The murder of an elderly couple, stabbing them more than 60 times and mutilating their bodies in a grotesque manner.
The murders of Claudia Maupin and Oliver Northup.
On the night of April 13, 2013, after years of feeding his homicidal impulses, Daniel Marsh made the decision to materialize his fantasies. In the early morning hours of April 14, he left his mother’s home and wandered the streets of Davis, California, looking for a house with open windows or doors. He finally arrived at the residence of Claudia Maupin and Oliver Northup.
Marsh cut the window screen, entered the residence and went to the couple’s bedroom, where he found them sleeping. He watched Maupin and Northup for a few minutes before attacking them in a frenzy of unspeakable violence, stabbing them to death. We talk about a brutal attack, leaving Northup with 61 stab wounds and Maupin with 67.
After killing Northup and Maupin, Marsh proceeded to dismember, eviscerate, and mutilate their bodies. The couple’s remains were discovered the next day. And thanks to the Marsh’s meticulous planning of the murders, no traces of DNA, fingerprints, footprints or other evidence were found at the crime scene. It took two months for authorities to arrest Daniel Marsh. And they only learned the truth when he bragged to Garibay and his girlfriend about the horrendous crimes.
Confession and condemnation.
During interrogation, Marsh confessed to the murders. He told investigators that the homicidal act gave him a feeling of “pure happiness” that lasted for weeks. In September 2014, Marsh was sentenced to 52 years in prison for these murders because he was considered completely sane. Although he claims to have found redemption during these years in prison, his parole requests have been denied due to the lasting impact of his actions on the victims’ families.
The controversial talk at TEDx.
Daniel Marsh was invited to participate in a TEDx talk titled “Embracing our Humanity” (“Embracing our Humanity”). At this event, Marsh openly addressed his crimes and shared his perspective on why people like him can experience positive changes during their time in prison, as well as why they deserve a chance at redemption. This talk was framed within the context of Proposition 57, a law that could offer convicted minors a chance at parole.
However, it is important to note that Marsh’s TEDx talk has been restricted and is only available to those with permission from the video owner. Some users of reddit they have suggested that the family of Marsh’s victims pushed for the video to be taken down.
