In the last few hours the Dalai Lama is in the middle of a major scandal after a video captured at the end of last February was made public on social networks, during a ceremony that the religious leader presided over in a temple in Dharamshala, where he is seen kissing a 6-year-old boy on the mouth.

According to international media, the controversial incident arose during the ceremony of the Indian M3M Foundation. The Dalai Lama reportedly asked the boy to come up to the dais where he was sitting. When the little boy appeared before him, he first pointed to one of his cheeks, so the little boy kissed him and gave him a hug.

After this fact, the Dalai Lama continued to take the boy by the arm and now asked him for a kiss on the mouth; the little boy was surprised and he did not know what to do so the head of Buddhism gave it to him and then he said “suck my tongue”and then take it out.

The boy also stuck out his tongue but little by little he moved away as the Dalai Lama laughed and tried to approach him to give him another hug while the audience also let out a few laughs.

The spiritual leader then addressed the boy, advising him to look out for those who create “peace and happiness” and not follow “human beings who always kill other people”, before giving him one last hug.

After the images were released, public opinion has raised its voice against this act, describing the Dalai Lama’s attitude as “inappropriate”, “scandalous” and “outrageous”.

Dalai Lama apologizes for kissing and asking boy to suck his tongue

This Monday, Through a statement posted on his social networks, the Dalai Lama offered a public apology to the boy and his family, as well as for those who may have taken his actions against this little boy badly.

“His holiness often makes fun of people he meets in an innocent and playful way, including in public and on camera,” the statement said.

As to why the Dalai Lama would have stuck out his tongue and asked the child to do the same, it could be explained as a Tibetan cultural issue.

A report from UC Berkeley’s Institute for East Asian Studies notes that “a cruel ninth-century Tibetan king had a black tongue, so people stick out their tongues to show they’re not like him (and not his brother). reincarnation)”. Since Buddhists believe in reincarnation, they fear that the evil king would reincarnate one day. For this reason, for centuries they have maintained the tradition of greeting by showing their tongues to confirm that they are not guilty of doing evil.

However, what cannot be explained is why he would have asked the boy to suck him.
