RC Celta announced this Tuesday the dismissal of coach Rafa Benítez because under his direction the team “has not obtained the results expected” by the club chaired by Marian Mouriño. The Madrid coach arrived at Balaídos last summer as a strong bet from the new president for the Centennial season. He signed a contract for three seasons, but the poor dynamics of his team, with only two points ahead of relegation, has accelerated his departure.

The coach arrived at the club with an extensive background of elite matches and titles behind him. The veteran coach sat on the Celta bench after a season and a half without managing any club. Before the Galician club, Benítez had coached Everton until 2022, which fired him in January. In addition, he had also previously managed Chinese side Dalian Yifang, Newcastle, Real Madrid, Naples, Chelsea, Inter, and his two greatest feats were the seasons he coached Liverpool and Valencia, with whom he won national and international cups and leagues.

Celta thus continues to maintain its permanence to the limit in three of the last five seasons. Currently, the team is 17th, after losing their last game against Real Madrid 4-0, and having only 5 wins in 28 games. In a statement, Celta thanked Rafa Benítez and his assistants for their “involvement, honesty and professionalism” since his arrival in Vigo, in addition to wishing him “a lot of luck and success” in the future.
